Paeonia 'Amalia Olson'

type: [herbaceous peony] – [species cultivar] – [lactiflora]

breeder:

Christian Olson, Abercrombie / Wahpeton, North Dakota

AMALIA OLSON (Olson 1959) D. LM. W. No seedling #. Pure white, double, medium to large flower. Petals overlap, symmetrically arranged in a slightly dome shaped flower. Slight red markings on reverse of guard petals. Awarded the Home Achievement Medal, National show in North Dakota 1959. Names for Mr. Olson's mother. Bulletin #154 September 1959.

Amalia Olson* (Olson 1959) ML.  Full double; all white, fragrant, good petal substance; a sumptuous flower which drains rainwater unusually well for a full double.  Sturdy, medium height bush and gorgeous flowers make one of the finest peonies for any purpose: for the border, for cutting or for exhibition.  Fall color is a bonus.  We are very partial to this one.

M.S. Uspenskaja 2003, p. 71:

Per the American Peony Society this peony was named for Mr. Olson’s mother. Mothers seem to have had quite a few lovely peonies named for them over the years! The flowers are beautiful in all respects but the fragrance is what puts it on my list of great peonies
